Deadpool Review

There's no denying that, when it comes to superheroes, none have gotten quite as much popularity in the past several years as Deadpool.  Everywhere you look, there's merchandise, cosplayers at conventions (hell I saw several Deadpool cosplays at the 2014 Midwest Media Expo in Detroit, my first ever convention), you name it, all dedicated to everyone's favorite, fourth-wall-breaking, "Merc With A Mouth".  So, after the bad taste left in our mouths of the terribly butchered excuse of a character from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, when footage emerged of Ryan Reynolds in full Deadpool garb to show a teaser for the movie, fans went nuts.

This version of Deadpool looked like it was going to be the faithful adaptation of the character that the fans, and Deadpool himself, deserved.  But, now that the movie has finally dropped, will this be the antihero that everyone has come to know and love or will it prove to be as embarrassing as...

You know what?  I can't even finish that sentence because this movie is undoubtedly Awesome and I'm here to talk about all the reasons why this is the case.

Deadpool himself tells the story of how he used to be Wade Wilson a mercenary for hire who tracked down stalkers of young girls to make sure that the girls were never troubled by them again.  After hooking up with a local bar attendee, an escort named Vanessa, for about a year, and after they confess their love for each other, Wade is diagnosed with terminal cancer.  Soon afterwards, a mysterious man offers him a way to cure his cancer, which Wilson agrees to, only to gain superpowers, disfigured skin, and a twisted sense of humor.  After escaping, Wilson, now going by the identity of Deadpool, sets off to get his revenge on those who ruined his life and fourth-wall hijinks, profanity, and gory kills ensue.

Me and 2 of my brothers along with some of their friends bought our tickets early on for the very first showing and let me just tell you guys right now that this movie does not disappoint by any means.

From the opening credits onwards, the audience, including us, could hardly stop laughing it was insane.  I honestly don't think that I've laughed that hard at a movie since me and my old college buddy saw Hotel Transylvania 2 several months ago.

The comedy in this movie was very on point.  Not only do we get a ton of fourth wall breaking from the title character, but we also get some very blunt humor made to lampoon Wolverine, the X-Men, Reynold's past portrayal of Deadpool from Wolverine, and even his portrayal of Green Lantern years prior and it's hilarious.  Add in a cameo from Stan Lee as a strip club DJ and the crowd was roaring.

The action scenes can be very gory a lot of the time, but, at the same time, there's also a very dark comedic tone to them as Deadpool spouts off one-liners like the wisecracking smartass fans know and love.  Even classic X-Man, Colossus, and newcomer, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, get in on the action.

Something that I feel I should bring up is that, even though this movie is mostly a comedy, it doesn't shy away from some of the softer moments.  I truly and honestly believed the chemistry between Wade and Vanessa and how she stayed by his side even when he was diagnosed with cancer.  Plus, we get to see the flipside of that with Wade when he heads off to undergo the procedure for fear of losing Vanessa.  There's even moments where, after he's been mutated with the deformed skin, he debates whether or not he should return to her, worried about how she'll react to his new appearance.

And, finally, the music was amazing.  There were many occasions where it would switch between orchestral music to a hard pounding hip-hop track to even Careless Whisper by Wham! and, strangely enough, all of them meshed together very well.

However, even with all the praises I've sang about this movie, there were a couple of minor problems that I had.  One of which being that there were a few instances where the comedy would become a little bit too predictable.  Even some of my fellow audience members seemed to catch on at certain points.  And another thing that kind of bothered me, though this is really nitpicking, was the fact that one character is often seen with a match between her teeth which I thought was going to build up to something or be explained later on, but it wasn't.

Still with all that said, Deadpool is gory, profane, fourth-wall-breaking, LOL fun.  While definitely not for younger viewers, those who are old enough to see it will definitely get a kick out of this movie which is why I give Deadpool a 4/5 stars.  Go and support this movie.  The time and effort put into it is well worth seeing.

And that was my review of Deadpool and I'd like to know what your thoughts are about it if you've seen it.  Feel free to comment below, keep loving movies, and I'll see you on the next post.  Later.

Submitted Movie Audition and upcoming Top 12 list

Hey everyone.  David here again to talk a little bit about what's been going on in my life as of lately.  So a few months ago I found this page on Facebook called Casting Calls where they basically post about auditions for Movies, TV Shows, and the like.  Well, just last Tuesday, I found out that they were holding online auditions for a few main characters in an upcoming Steven Spielberg movie, Ready Player One, based off of the book by the same name.  The role of Wade Watts sounded like a good fit for me so I memorized my audition lines, recorded the video, edited it to the proper size with help from one of my brothers, and submitted it.  Here's hoping that I get a callback.  I'll try to keep you guys in the loop.

Aside from that, the Super Bowl was yesterday and I personally felt it and most of the ads were kinda meh.  At least me and my family got to eat a lot of junk food.  Also, next month, I'm going to be posting another Top 12 list to coincide with the release of a specific buddy comedy movie from a particular studio.  Until then, I will be posting my review of Deadpool over the weekend so you've at least got that to look forward to and I'll see you guys then.  Take care.
